How to catch a catfish?

Sounds easy doesnt it? Sinkers, heavy line, and nightcrawler, cut bait or dough or a hook. But i try and try and try and cant catch a friggen catfish. Ive been a bass fisherman all my life and i would like to expand into more species. All the lakes i fish at are pretty shallow i guess ( 25 feet max ) and there is also a river i know people catch nice channel catfish at but for 3 years yes 3 years! i havent caught a bullhead or a catfish. My current setup is: Berkley big game pole with 25 pound trilene big game line on a quantam optix spinning reel. I use a large hook with a dead bluegill, or nightcrawlers most the time. Can anybody give me tips?

Well, you can rule out the answer about the fish being line shy. Catfish do not care whatsoever about line; they see, they eat, regardless of much of anything.

Have you tried meat products for the channels? Chicken liver, gizzards, and even hot dogs will get them in. However, I am surprised that they haven’t hit the dead bluegill; normally, the bigger channels are all over them. Just out of curiosity, you are cutting the dead bluegill up, aren’t you? If not, you really need to. There’s a lot of gunk that will come out of the bluegill that will attract them.

Also, I see many people launching their bait out as far as possible, towards the middle of the water. That has very rarely worked for me. Catfish seem to really be like bass; they really like being in and around cover. Yes, catfish are bottom feeders, but “bottom” doesn’t mean as deep as possible. Fish on the bottom, but don’t be afraid to fish in shallower water, where there is cover.
