Why do people go fishing for fun?
Not bashing anyone’s opinion, by the way.
Okay, so I know that fishing was developed for food a long time ago. But today, food can be found in stores all over the place (not in some places, but you get my point). Why do people still like fishing for fun today?
I mean, all you do is cast your line, and wait maybe ten boring, long minutes until a fish bites and then you overreact about it? That doesn’t make much sense. Plus, I hate it because you get bug-bites, which are so annoying! (I love the outdoors, but hate fishing and bug bites. Go figure.)
A lot of you are being sexist, just STFU women can do anything a man can do AND BETTER.
Ok, I’m going to try this again, I accidentally hit the back button earlier and lost everything… (new laptop)
And just to get it out of the way, Yes, I’m a woman, and yes, I understand.
First attempt was very rambly, I’m going to get right to the main part of what I was going to say earlier…
I’m going to put you where I would like to be if I weren’t stuck at home playing Mommy all the time now…
My “fishing hole” is the north end of one of the most diverse estuary systems in North America… me, my kayak, and All Creation… paddle north from the boat ramp at the marina as the sun just breaks over the horizon… Don’t look south, the condos that went up the other year will break the spell that has you thinking that you’re the only person in existance… to the east across the water is the most diverse wildlife refuge in the country… baitfish skitter across the water, breaking the mirrored surface as they try to elude whatever is chasing them… manatees snort and blow as they wake up, bumping the bottom of the kayak as they head to deeper water… a tarpon breaks the surface, it’s silver scales reflecting the light of the rising sun and is gone… a flock of black skimmers trail their beaks in the shallows in search of breakfast… an osprey plunges, talons first, into the water, rising with a twitching silvery form which it takes back to it’s hungry chicks… Flocks of terns congregate over a school of small baitfish, daintily swooping down to pluck a morsel from the still water… pelicans spot the action, breaking the delicacy with crashing dives… Dolphins roll and play out in deeper water, chasing fish and being a general distraction…
Myself and All Creation… Divinity giving It’s Gifts as They were meant to be given, as they were meant to be enjoyed…
No, fishing’s not fun…
Fishing is so much more… it’s a connection to everything around you… it’s a time to consider your life, step away from the stress of day to day life, regardless of if you catch anything or not… you get out on a day like that and you almost ~forget~ to rig up your bait and even try for anything… forget the fact that a fish from your cooler will taste better than a fish you buy… forget the connections to the past, whether it be just generations or millenia… fishing is the here and now… it’s the ten minutes (or however long) you wait for the bite, but it’s ~not~ just the strike and the hookup, it’s everything.
Oh, and they make this stuff called mosquito repellent… use a brand that contains DEET… it will keep those biting insects away.
Edit:
Sorry, Fireman, I’m spoken for already…
