math help number4?
a sample of lead used to make a lead sinker for fishing has an initial temperature of 27.6 celcius and is poured into a mold immediately after it has melted.
how much energy is needed to melt 0.242 kg of lead? assume the specifif heat the latent heat and the melting point of lead are 128 J/kg celcius, 2.45 x 10 to the fourth J/kg and 327.3 celcius respectively.answer in units of J.
thgis is a 2 part problem
1. senseable heat is to raise temp to melting temp
2. latent heat is to change phase
Q = heat transfer in joules
Q = Qsenseble + Qlatent
Q = mcp(dt) + mL ——->
where m = mass
dt = change in temp to get to melting point
cp = sp heat
L = latent heat
since same mass factor it out
Q = m (cp(dt) + L)
Q = .242kg(128J/kgC(327.3C-27.6C) + 2.45X10^4J/kg)
Q= .242(128(299.7) +2.45×10^4)
Q= .242(38361.6+2.45×10^4)
Q= .242(62861.6) = 1521.5072Joules = 1.52 x10^4 Joules
I think thats right- the eqn is for sure– but please please double check the math with your calculator– i didn t have one
when i doid the problem
