Rods and Reels (Fishing Pocket Books) $22.97 … |
can you use overhead fishing reels with a normal heavy boat rod?
i have a heavy boat rod (shimano) and i need a reel for it.
can i use an overhead reel with it or am i best to get a normal reel for it
i want to use it out in the bay and go snapper fishing with it
also what size line or braid would i need?
i do not want to use this rod for overhead use
I’m not sure what you mean by “overhead” reel, but doing some searching it seems to be another name for a conventional or baitcasting type of reel, that is, one that’s mounted on top of the rod. And I assume by “normal” reel you mean a spinning reel. See the links below for pictures of the two types of tackle.
A “boat rod” is made for conventional reels. These rods have small diameter guides, and can be made for very heavy line (up to 80 or 100 pound test). They tend to be short and not too flexible. (There are longer conventional rods, but they aren’t called boat rods.)
Spinning reels are mounted and used underneath the rod, and spinning rods have large diameter guides. In general, the heaviest spinning reels are made for 25-30 pound line. The rods are longer, more flexible, and made for casting.
You could get away with using a spinning reel on a boat rod, but if the rod is rated for much heavier line than the reel is, it’ll be awkward, to say the least, and casting any distance will be a challenge.
If you want a spinning outfit, you’re best off getting a matched rod and reel, and if you want to use the boat rod, you’re best off with a conventional reel matched to the line rating of the rod.
