How do I cast a shooting head fly line?

I have been fly fishing for about 4 years now and I have never needed a shooting head until now. I am fishing a lake from shore with a nice drop off about 50-70′ out. Most of the guys out there fish a shooting head. 8wt rod 27′ sinking shooting head with 70′ tangle free running line. Curious…would I cast it the same as my regular line?

The short answer is, yes. But the long answer is, it depends how you are casting your standard line. The basic casting stroke is the same, what we do is add things to that stroke, like single hauls, double hauls, speed and various aerial mends when necessary.

To cast your sinking shooting head from shore it would be easiest to start by using a stripping basket for your running line. Then without false casting use one double haul and let it fly. You will get what you’ll get as far as distance goes. Depending on your rod and your casting form, you may have to slow down the speed of your stroke or you may have to quicken the acceleration.

It would be best to practice and become familiar and proficient with the line prior to hitting the water. Check this web page for some free fishing and casting tips: http://www.orvis.com/intro.aspx?dir_id=758&subject=3077
