New puppy..very hectic..tips on crate training…?
The puppy is a 6 week old tiny boy name Nemo ( like the lil fish from the movie). He has only peed once (inside this morning..not good) since I’ve gotten him ( which was yesterday around 6:30). I took him outside twice since he has eaten today to the same spot. Last night he wouldn’t use the bathroom outside or around my house at all. I know he is still getting use to surroundings. Can anyone give any advice for crate training? I’ve heard rewarding him with treats when he does pee outside ( if he ever does) helps the process. HELP PLEASE! I love him… and I’m really tired from the previous night
Thanks.
He is six weeks because the people needed to sell them quickly so they could move.. besides he is just as fine with me as he would be with the breeders
Thanks for everything everyone!
I know you are tired…but you will have to get used to it. A puppy..especially one a bit younger than the usual adoption age..is not going to get potty training in a day or two!! You have a crate…for the time being it should be large enough for your pup to stand, turn around and lie down comfortably. You should not feed your dog in the crate. Your pup can be left in the crate one hour for each month of its age. At this time in your pups life, you can crate him for the hour, but I would not leave him alone…crate him while you are still in the house. Puppies should be fed 3 x a day…and taken out to toilet every 2 hours….and then 20 minutes after meals. Not all people do a night run…I did and it worked for me, but I know not everyone has success with this. I would put my pup in his crate for the night…and take him out at around 2 30 am. I left the lights off and did not speak or interact with him…just picked him up, put him on a pad, and put him back in the crate and left immediately. You may not see results for a while…you just have to keep it up. If he gets it, great…if not, he should be well on the way by the time he is 3-4 months old. If he has accidents in the house…DO NOT SCOLD him…clean it thoroughly and forget it UNLESS you actually catch him in the act. Then do a firm no, grab him and get him outside. No pushing his nose in it!!! He won’t get it. And also, you have a male dog…don’t mistake marking for peeing accidents..they are not the same…but you do the same thing…watch him, catch him at it and tell him no. This really is like having an infant in the house…take a nap, have fun, good luck!
