Are the flys that come in a fly fisher beginner kit good?
I’m new to fly fishing and was wondering are they good for blueill small bass and pickeral there’s one fly I have that’s a small hook with brown fur and the others are the same but bigger
in my experience the simpler the pattern the better and i am assuming that the flies that came with your kit are basic. my father still ties a fly for streams using a piece of an old hunting jacket he has kept for over 60 years and he more often than not out-fishes me. presentation of a fly is more important than anything but knowledge is a close second. do a little reading on the bugs that hatch in the seasons you are going to be fishing and try to match the hatch with flies from your local sports shop. also understanding where fish tend to go during different seasons, water levels, and weather conditions can make a day. certain species tend to be attracted to different colors when you are using attractor patterns and asking a local or seasoned fisherman has never hurt my day of fishing.
i have 40 years of fly-fishing experience and there are days when i can do no wrong but there are a lot when i am just flogging the water. there are days when a heavy hatch comes on and they are rising all around me and nothing i have in my boxes will match it and i get nothing but those are the days that make me go back time after time.
