Whats the best bottom feeder for a reef tank?

I have a 54 gal tank with 3 turbo snails, 4 hermit crabs, 1 clown, 1 coral beauty, 1 dotty back, 1 brain coral, 1 elegance coral, 1 arrow head crab, and pink hatian anemone. I feed the fish every other day and the corals once a week. The rocks and glass stay very clean but the sand turns nasty very quickly any suggestions on what i could get to help with keeping the sand clean. I was going to get a cucumber but was told they release a toxin that could kill everthing else.

What is making your sand turn nasty? Especially if you are not feeding but every other day? It isn’t fish waste since they do not have solid waste like fresh fish. Chances are what you are seeing is coraline algae and there is nothing that is going to prevent it from growing to some degree. Urchin eat the algae however they will also eat the coral. There are a few snails as well but again, they should not be with the corals.

Adding phosphate pads to the filter media will eventually bring the algae under control. Check your calcium levels as well since coraline algae feeds on calcium and lighting.

Other than specific worms only a sea squirt (Ascidian Tunicates )will actually clean the water. Even though they are called pests in most areas they were introduced in the Indian River in florida to help clean up the toxins and neon algaes in the river.
