Emergency – tropical fish filter not working?
Please help, I have just changed 1/2 the tank of water in the tank, as the nitrate was higher than ideal, and no matter what I do, my filter won’t start again. I’ve done what my local fish-guru has told me to; plunged the sponges up and down, turned everything off and on again, but nothing is working.
I am panicking, my fish are all at the top of the tank, and the water is incredibly cloudy.
If anyone could help, it really would be so much appreciated.
Thank you in advance.
The fish are likely at the top of the tank because the filter helps to add oxygen to the water. This won’t help with filtration issues, but to get more oxygen into the water, take a cup of tank water and dump it back into the tank from several inches (or feet!) above the water. You’ll see a lot of little bubbles in the water –that’s good. It means you’re aerating. Do this a few times every hour until your filter is working again. It’s not a permanent fix, but it’ll help to keep your fish more comfortable while you work on the problem.
