Piranhas in Colorado?
Ok so I’ve seen the map of where piranhas are legal and illegal. And it says Colorado is illegal, but have called about 10 fish stores and they all sell them. I also asked and they all say it’s ok to have them. If they are illegal how are they able to sell them? What’s the deal?
You can own a piranha in Colorado, but you must have a permit. Call the pet store and ask what you need to do to get a permit to own a piranha.
While your waiting for your permit, you should research this freshwater fish. Don’t make the mistake of thinking that all they eat is live food. It is never a good idea to feed a piranha feeder fish (usually gold fish). Feeder goldfish are notorious for carrying diseases and parasites and you don’t want your piranha getting sick.
Piranha need a varied diet. They need vegetable matter and not just live food. Don’t make the mistake of thinking piranha are vicious meat eaters. Don’t get a piranha if your only doing it to have a “cool” fish.
Make sure you have a rather large tank so you can keep at least 3 piranha. Being schooling fish, they will be happier and healthier in a school. Three is really the minimum and you need to have at least a 75 gallon tank.
