Why are Goldfish seen as beginner fish that need a small little bowl?

…When they really can get HUGE, produce a LOT of waste, and are best suited for ponds? I mean I don’t get how this whole thing got started that you can keep Goldfish in a little fishbowl without a filter…
Don’t they get 6″-12″ inches?

Because they are cheap, so they are considered “disposable”. As a result of so many of them being kept in inappropriate, unfiltered containers, “everybody knows” they don’t live long. What it boils down to is making money. If they can sell you a cheap fish(since they breed readily in ponds), why would people want to spend $100 or more to keep a fish that didn’t even cost a dollar? If it dies and it cost less than a buck, just buy a new one until you’re tired of fish dying.
Unfortunately, because they’re so cheap, most people don’t even want to learn the real facts, which perpetuates the myths. “Don’t confuse me with facts, my mind is made up.”
Those of us that truly love fish don’t give up though, even if we only get through to one person now and then, we feel we’re doing our part. It does get awfully frustrating at times though.

6-12 inches is for the fancies, commons/comets get upwards of 2 feet.

Good luck, hang in there and fight the good fight!
