What were corner-notched arrowheads used for?
I’m doing an archaeology problem set and i determined there was a change from microblade arrowheads to side notched arrowheads when the poeple started hunting smaller game. however, there is also a distinct transition from side-notched to corner-notched. The middens indicate far more deep sea fish bones, but i’ve never heard of hunting fish with arrows. in general, what are corner-notched arrows usually used for?
plenty of tribes hunt fish with arrows- this is very common in the Amazon river basin even today
at a guess (I make and shoot arrows) corner notching gives you an extra set of “barbs” to keet the arrowhead in the body of the prey.
It also allows an extra purchase point to secure the arrowhead to the shaft of the arrow
