Why is their normally not any “16lb” fishing line?

It’s confusing how fishing line is. It goes 2lb, 4lb, 6lb, 8lb, 10lb, 12lb, 14lb, 17lb, 20lb…. Why not just keep on going in “two’s”?

Yeah, I never thought much about it, but as you move up the scale in weight the steps need to be bigger to be meaningful. You wouldn’t want to go up by 2s too far — the difference between, say, 30-pound line and 32-pound line would be pretty much negligible. I guess it could have to do with manufacturing, too. Switching to steps of 3 pounds eliminates one step between 14 and 20 but with more or less the same range, thereby eliminating one step between 14 and 20. It’s probably just as efficient for anglers to choose between 17 and 20 as opposed to having 16, 18, and 20 to choose from.
